The collaborative Pioneer Curriculum is ambitious, challenging and creative, carefully sequencing knowledge so that children are supported in building a deep understanding across all subject areas. Developed collaboratively across the Pioneer Federation, our ambitious, broad and balanced curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils progressively build, deepen and apply their knowledge and skills over time. Designed specifically for mixed-age classes across Key Stages 1 and 2, our two-year curriculum provides a coherent and systematic pathway that enables all pupils to achieve the National Curriculum expectations and more.<\/p>

Our Curriculum Overviews<\/a> set out the strategic intent and sequence of learning across every subject over the two-year cycle. They ensure clear progression and full coverage of the National Curriculum.<\/p>

Our Subject Overviews<\/a> explain the intent of each subject, showing how National Curriculum objectives are mapped through carefully sequenced units of learning. They also include our progression of Core and Aspirational Vocabulary<\/strong>, ensuring pupils develop the language needed to become confident learners within each subject.<\/p>

Our Medium-Term Plans (MTPs)<\/a> provide the framework for delivering the curriculum each term. They break learning into sequential lesson blocks, identifying the key knowledge, skills, learning activities, expected outcomes and vocabulary for every unit. Each MTP also demonstrates how each school’s unique cultural context is woven into the curriculum. These documents support teachers in planning, adapting and delivering high-quality lessons while ensuring full curriculum coverage.<\/p>

The Pioneer Federation curriculum has been designed specifically for mixed-age classes through a two-year rolling programme. Rather than separating learning by individual year groups, our curriculum provides a shared sequence of progressively-challenging knowledge and skills across each two-year cycle.<\/p>

Every National Curriculum objective is explicitly mapped within our Medium-Term Plans to ensure that all pupils experience the full curriculum for their year groups over the two years.<\/p>

Teachers use these documents to deliver lessons with high-quality teaching for all, and adaptations and scaffolds to support children so that the lessons respond to the needs of each cohort. Learning is planned using a ‘stage, not age’ approach, enabling pupils of different ages and abilities to access the curriculum at an appropriate level, while being suitably challenged. Our curriculum is designed to be ambitious and accessible for every child.<\/p>

Teachers adapt planning, teaching and assessment to meet the needs of their individual classes, using the Medium-Term Plans and use \u2018Cohort Planning meetings\u2019 to personalise learning for each school and cohort.<\/p>

At the beginning of every unit, teachers identify pupils’ prior knowledge and build upon it throughout the sequence of learning. This enables teaching to respond directly to pupils’ existing understanding and misconceptions.<\/p>

Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning and assessments are used to ensure the next steps for learning are clearly defined.<\/p>

Each unit begins with a Subject Knowledge Organiser<\/strong>, introducing the key vocabulary and essential knowledge pupils will learn. Teachers establish pupils’ prior understanding at the start of each unit before assessing learning throughout the sequence of lessons.<\/p>

Every unit concludes with a Subject End Point Assessment<\/strong>, enabling teachers to evaluate pupils’ understanding of the key knowledge and skills. These assessments also encourage pupils to reflect on the unit’s overarching enquiry question, promoting deeper thinking and knowledge recall.<\/p>

Assessment information is used to adapt future planning, address misconceptions and ensure pupils continue to make strong progress. During termly Pioneer Cohort Planning meetings, teachers evaluate the effectiveness of previous Medium-Term Plans before refining subsequent units to meet pupils’ needs.<\/p>

Subject Leaders from across the Federation regularly monitor the quality of education through subject deep dives, lesson observations, planning reviews and scrutiny of pupils’ work. Senior leaders triangulate this evidence to evaluate teaching, learning and curriculum implementation across the Federation.<\/p>

Teacher assessments are quality assured through internal moderation, federation-wide cohort moderation, external moderation, pupil tests and regular standardisation training.<\/p>

Pupil progress is tracked using Pioneer ARBOR tracking and datawalls for all subjects. Termly pupil progress meetings enable teachers and leaders to review attainment, identify pupils requiring additional support and review and plan appropriate interventions.<\/p>

The Governing Board plays a strategic role in ensuring every school delivers a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum. Governors monitor curriculum development, pupil outcomes and statutory compliance through regular reports, school visits and analysis of achievement data, providing both support and challenge to school leaders.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The sequence of learning across our curriculum has been carefully planned to maximise progression, engagement and meaningful learning opportunities.<\/p>

Curriculum sequencing takes account of:<\/p>

  • Progression of knowledge and skills<\/strong> \u2013 Learning is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build systematically over time.<\/li>
  • Seasonality and significant events<\/strong> \u2013 Units are taught when they offer the richest learning opportunities. For example, Plants is taught during the summer to support practical outdoor learning, while the Shang Dynasty of Ancient China unit aligns with Chinese New Year and the World War Two unit coincides with Remembrance Day.<\/li>
  • Locality and cultural capital<\/strong> \u2013 Learning reflects the unique context of our schools through local studies, educational visits and Forest School experiences. Examples include visits to Hartfield when studying Winnie-the-Pooh, Hever Castle during the Tudor topic and Cuckmere Haven when learning about rivers.<\/li>
  • Whole-school coherence<\/strong> \u2013 Some aspects of the curriculum, such as Online Safety, are taught across all year groups simultaneously to reinforce key messages and support progression throughout the school.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    We believe that enrichment is an essential part of a high-quality education. Meaningful experiences beyond the classroom broaden horizons, raise aspirations, deepen learning and contribute significantly to pupils’ personal development.<\/p>

    Through a rich programme of visits, visitors and practical experiences, pupils develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while embedding their curriculum learning in meaningful contexts.<\/p>

    Every pupil has access to enrichment opportunities across five key areas:<\/p>

    • Civic Engagement<\/strong> \u2013 including volunteering, debating, pupil leadership and community involvement.<\/li>
    • Arts and Culture<\/strong> \u2013 including music, art, dance, theatre and visits to museums and galleries.<\/li>
    • Nature, Outdoors and Adventure<\/strong> \u2013 including Forest School, environmental projects, gardening, residential visits and outdoor learning.<\/li>
    • Sport and Physical Activity<\/strong> \u2013 including individual and team sports, dance, competitions and participation in sporting events.<\/li>
    • Life and Future Skills<\/strong> \u2013 including digital literacy, STEM, enterprise, cooking, financial education and Relationships and Sex Education.<\/li><\/ul>
