{"id":2187,"date":"2017-05-16T18:31:08","date_gmt":"2017-05-16T18:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/easthoathly.pioneerfederation.co.uk\/?p=2187"},"modified":"2017-05-30T20:24:15","modified_gmt":"2017-05-30T20:24:15","slug":"mr-herdman-is-caretaker-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pioneerfederation.co.uk\/easthoathly\/mr-herdman-is-caretaker-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Mr Herdman is Caretaker of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-2187\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-2187-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2187-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2187-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>A CARETAKER who has raised more than \u00a3280,000 for the three schools he works at has been hailed for going \u2018beyond the call of duty\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Herdman, who works at Laughton Community Primary, East Hoathly CE Primary and Chiddingly Primary schools, has been named East Sussex Caretaker of the Year 2017.<span id=\"more-4040\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As well as working tirelessly to maintain the three sites, Mr Herdman has researched, applied for and secured a total of \u00a3285,024 in funding from various sources to improve the schools.<\/p>\n<p>Projects delivered as a result include playground resurfacing, a new roof, play equipment, energy-saving LED lighting and restoration of Laughton\u2019s school clock and bell tower.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-2187-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2187-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2221 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pioneerfederation.co.uk\/easthoathly\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Caretaker-of-the-Year.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"712\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pioneerfederation.co.uk\/easthoathly\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Caretaker-of-the-Year.jpg 712w, https:\/\/pioneerfederation.co.uk\/easthoathly\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Caretaker-of-the-Year-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-2187-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2187-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2187-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>He said: \u201cIt\u2019s brilliant and came as a complete shock \u2013 I wasn\u2019t expecting it at all. The kids are really enthusiastic and I\u2019m really proud that they recognise what I do and enjoy the things I\u2019ve helped to raise money for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Herdman also manages to fit into his busy schedule running a breakfast club, leading the children\u2019s \u2018eco group\u2019, managing an area of woodland and looking after the school chickens.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria Brown, deputy head teacher at Laughton, said: \u201cPaul works tirelessly for the school and is not only a brilliant caretaker but fantastic with people, with a great sense of humour the children love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel lucky to have a caretaker who is so passionate about the job and who is so driven to make the school a better place for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James Procter, executive head teacher at East Hoathly and Chiddingly, said: \u201cPaul is a friendly, hard-working caretaker and a real asset to our schools, who goes out of his way to be part of the school community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The winning nomination included glowing references from pupils, one of whom, Tom, said: \u201cMr Herdman is very generous with his time and has a massive effect on how happy we are at Laughton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schools across the county were asked to nominate their caretaker of the year, with the winner selected by Stuart Gallimore, East Sussex County Council director of children\u2019s services.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cIt was clear that all those nominated do an incredible amount of work and are highly regarded by staff, children and parents, but one person stood out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaul not only works across three schools, which is impressive enough, but has raised a huge amount of money to improve the fabric of the schools \u2013 that\u2019s what I call going beyond the call of duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Narrowly pipped at the post was runner-up Mark Cornford, of St Andrew\u2019s CE Infants\u2019 School, Eastbourne, who has also raised money not just for his school but for the pupil it sponsors at a school in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>Head teacher Carol Meakins said: \u201cMark is keen to be involved in every area of school life, acting with integrity and a sense of humour.
