Forest School Update 17th October

This term the children have been practicing their fire lighting skills, using a flint and steel to create a spark to light a piece of cotton wool. With the fire roaring away the classes were able to enjoyed trying cinnamon apples that they prepared and cooked over a fire. The apples that they used were gathered by the children from within the school grounds. These were a success with many of the children wanting seconds!

Walking around the site the children discovered many conkers. These were then used along with some clay to create snails, the body was made from clay and a conker was used as the shell with two small sticks pushed into the body for eyes. Some children chose to get more creative and make a selection of animals, one being a Koala clinging to a stick.

There was some great team work from the children in Sycamore class as they worked together to make some improvements to the mud kitchen area. First they dismantled two pallets to give them the wood they needed to make two solid pallets. Once these were constructed they measured where the posts needed to go and used a post rammer to bang them into the ground, making sure to keep checking the height so that both posts were in
at the same height. The pallets were then slotted in and screwed on, hooks were then added so that all the pots and pans could be hung up.

Oak class had their first ever Forest School joined by their year 6 buddies. They worked with their buddies to have a go at lighting a piece of cotton wool using a flint and steal. They also practiced there balancing skills on the slack line, created dens under the trees and hunted for bugs hiding under logs.
