Oak Class started their Forest School with a big Easter egg hunt. They did this in groups searching in the trees, around grassy tree trunks and behind logs. It didn’t take long for each group to have a basket full of yummy treats.
After the Easter egg hunt the class were free to explore the Forest School site and any activities available today. Many of them chose to do a spring scavenger hut, and they used an ID sheet to help them spot many different signs of spring. They worked in small groups helping each other to find as many things on their list. They spotted buds in one tree and then looked at the buds in another tree that had started to open, showing the new green leaves for this year. They also turned over logs to find insects and stood still listening for birds singing.
Oak were joined at Forest School by a selection of bird teddies. The children took the bird and gathered up a selection of natural materials like twigs and moss, they used these materials to build a nest for their chosen bird. Some of the nests were created in the V of a tree whereas others were made on the ground, and the birds were then placed in the nests. One child created her own little Blue Tit family with two bird teddies and a baby that she had made using a stick that she had wrapped with blue and green wool.
Some children chose to make a bunny using a Y shaped stick. They used a knife to peel the bark off to make the ears and a small face, they then used pens to decorate their bunny and add a little face. They finished these by wrapping the end of the stick with wool.
While digging in the mud a small group discovered a square, plastic something, they made it their mission to get it out of the ground. Using a trowel, sauce pan handle and a potato masher they scraped the mud away all the way around the edge until they were able to pop it out the ground. What they had found was the magnifying lid to a bug finder.
