Oak Class started their Forest School with a tub of cream that they were tasked with shaking as hard as they could with the hope of turning it into butter. They all tried really hard and with a little adult help we soon had butter. The Class then had the opportunity to try some of the butter on a cracker.
The children came into the pond area in small groups to have a go at pond dipping to see what may be living in our school pond. They pushed their nets down under the water, moved them about a little before pulling them out to see what they had caught. Everything that was caught was placed into a tray so that the children could take a closer look and use an ID sheet to help them identify what they had found. They discovered that they found many broad-bodied chaser nymphs, pond snails, dragonfly nymphs and a couple of Newts.
Some children chose to have a go at whittling a piece of willow. They did this by putting a glove on the hand that will be holding the piece of willow and using a peeler they stripped all the bark off. The Class did really well at this making sure to they removed every bit of bark. They were then able to add a point to one end making a pencil, and using crushed up charcoal with a little water to make a paste they were able to do some drawing. Other children chose to make some elder beads. This was done by using a palm drill to push out the pithy middle of the elder, the children were than able to tread them onto a piece of wool to create a necklace.
