Sycamore started their session today by working in pairs to build bug hotels and fill the bug hotel with natural materials. They stuffed many fallen leaves on the bottom layer, masonry bricks in the other layers that they then filled with sticks and dry dead stinging nettles. Two tyres have been placed at the front of the bug hotel ready to become planters. The children filled them with the soil that had been pushed up by the moles!
At our last Forest School session, the Class discussed the building of a new wood store to make sure we had dry firewood. The children that made a design took it in turns to share their ideas. There were some amazing ideas put forward: they thought about what needs to be stored, suggested guttering to help take the rain water away and slatted sides to allow air flow.
There was a selection of bird teddies for Sycamore to use at Forest School today. The children were challenged to have a go at building their chosen bird a nest. They worked in teams to choose their nest location and gather natural materials. The nests were then built in hedgerows, up trees and on the ground.
A group of children took on the task of clearing some of the excess vegetation in the pond. Working their way around the edge of the pond they pulled out the plants and these came out in large matted blankets. While moving plants around, the children came across a few newts hiding in the vegetation, and these were carefully placed back in the water at the other side of the pond away from where they were working. Moving in a little deeper they even found a net that had been lost at some point in the past!
