Sycamore Forest School

Sycamore Class started out on the school field learning a new game called keeper of the keys. Standing in a large circle with one child in the middle, their eyes closed with a set of keys placed in their hands. The children were chosen at random to sneak in and steal the keys running as fast as they could around the circle back to their spot without getting caught, this is rather tricky in wellies on wet grass!

The Class were given a container of cream that they were challenged to shake as hard and fast as they could with the hope of making butter. Taking it in turns to shake the cream it wasn’t long before they had achieved this. The children were then able to try some of the butter on a cracker, this was enjoyed by all with many of the class wanting seconds.

Last term a group of children started the construction of a new bug hotel within the pond area on the school grounds. Today they chose to continue with the construction of this bug hotel. First they used a saw to cut some plastic drainage pipes into short lengths to push into the sides of the bug hotel, these were then filled with pine cones and lengths of small sticks. They also pushed in larger pieces of wood to fill in any gaps around the pipes and gathered up a selection of rotten logs to create a log pile next to the bug hotel. To finish off they added soil to the top and planted some heather creating a growing roof that they also surrounded with a selection of logs.

Some children chose to practice their whittling skills by making a pencil from a length of willow. They did this by using a knife to remove all the bark and create a point at one end making a pencil. They then used charcoal and chalk that the crushed up and added a little water to making a paste. They were then able to use this paste to draw first on paper but then on each other using the paste as face paint! The children also used their time at Forest School to climb trees, create a variety of swings and hammocks and also make a selection of dens.
