Squirrels Forest School

Squirrels started their session today by taking a look at a selection of bones belonging to animals from the British countryside. As each one was looked at the class had a go at working out what animal it was, with a few clues they did quite well. The bones were passed round giving everyone the opportunity to take a closer look.

Once down at Forest School a few children helped to lay and light the fire, making sure to start with the larger sticks at the bottom working their way to smaller sticks at the top. They then used a flint and steel to light a piece of cotton wool. This is quite tricky to do but there was some great perseverance from the children with a few managing to get it lit by themselves. Once the fire was going a kettle was placed on top of it to boil some water ready for hot chocolate. The children helped to get all the cups ready and then watched for the steam to start coming from the spout giving us a sign that the water was ready.

Some children chose to continue digging for more treasure that they had started the last time they were at Forest School. This time they found a few tile pieces and many worms. Digging a little deeper the children came across a tunnel. They then had a big discussion of what may have made the tunnel, the winning animal was a mouse.

Using empty toilet rolls the children made bird feeders to place around our Forest School site to help feed the local birds. They did this by covering the toilet rolls in lard and then rolling them in bird seed. They then chose a tree branch to hang their feeder from.

Today session was finished by sitting around the fire circle enjoying a nice warm hot chocolate playing a game of woodland whisper.
