Arriving on the school grounds Forest School site Owls class discovered that nature had taken over the fire circle, the grass was so long that the seating had almost disappeared. The children got stuck in straight away with clearing the grass a little so that we could have a fire pit. With the grass cleared some of the class chose to help lay and light the fire practicing their fire lighting skills. Many found this easy managing to light the cotton wool on their second strike. Those that found it a little harder were determined not to give up until they had achieved a spark and lit their cotton wool. Once the fire was going well the children took it in turns to make a pizza inside a flat bread, they then wrapped it up in foil and it was placed on the fire. The pizzas didn’t take long for the cheese to turn all gooey ready to be enjoyed. As it was their last session the children also roasted a marshmallow that was placed between two chocolate biscuits ready to be eaten. Owls class were asked to split into teams and challenged with building a den as watertight as possible, they chose to go boys vs girls. They used many tarpaulins which they attached up in the trees using ropes and small pegs that they had made from sticks. They also used branches to prop out the sides making more space within their den for their class mates. Once they were happy with their creation it was time to water test it with a large bucket of water. Both dens held out rather well when the water was poured on the top however when the water was thrown in from the side we ended up with some rather soggy children.
