Woodland class started their session today learning how to make butter by shaking cream. They gathered round and watched as the cream was poured into a pot, as a group we talked about how the cream starts as a liquid and if we shake it hard it will become a solid. The children then took it in turns to shake the cream as hard as they could, it took a lot of shaking but they eventually made butter. Once it was ready the children sat round the fire circle and had the opportunity to try the butter on a cracker. This was enjoyed by most of the class with many of them wanting seconds.
In small groups the children came into the pond area to have a look at what had been caught from our school pond. To help the children identify what lives in the pond everything that was caught was placed in a clear tray, the children were then given an ID sheet. They looked at the images on their sheet to work out what had been caught, they did really well at this.
Many of the children chose to use a peeler to have a go at whittling their own piece of Willow. Once all the bark was removed from their stick they then had a little adult help to add a point to their stick creating a pencil. They then crushed up charcoal and added a little water making a black paste to draw with, they drew on our fire circle logs and nearby trees.
Some children chose to spend time creating yummy natural foods in the mud kitchen or enjoying a bug hunt, looking under many logs. They found lots of worms and a rather large snail.
