Sitting around the fire circle Owls class passed round a piece of a plant, each child taking their turn to smell the plant. The class were the challenged to work out what they thought the plant was, Owls were spot on with their guess of wild Garlic.
A small group then practiced their fire lighting skills. First they laid the fire, placing the larger sticks at the bottom to smaller sticks at the top. The fire was then lit using a flint and steel. White waiting for the fire to burn down to a bed on embers the children cut up the wild garlic as small as they could, this was then mixed in with some butter. Bread was then toasted and a layer of garlic butter was added ready for the children to try, this was rather popular with many of the class wanting seconds.
Owls class worked really hard and very well as a team in the pond area down at Forest School today. They had been challenged with removing some of the vegetation that was taking over the pond. They started by laying on their tummies, arms stretched out pulling the plants out in small chunks. This soon developed to some children standing in the water pushing out the large clump of vegetation while the rest of the group pulled, this was a very effective method. During the vegetation removal the children were joined by a Frog swimming around the wellies. They also discovered many Newts hiding in the vegetation, all of these were caught and returned to the water.
Using secateurs a group of children contented to tackle the brambles growing down at our new Forest School site. A couple of them took on the task of making a tunnel all the way through the brambles. It took them a while but they finally managed to make it through.
