Making our way across The Croft to the Wellie Tree, the children were set the challenge of gathering as many small fallen Silver Birch branches as they could in 2 minutes. They did really well managing to fill a large bag to overflowing. They found that some of the sticks gathered were a little long for the bag so they had to snap them to make them fit.
The children were given a spring scavenger hunt sheet to help them spot some early signs of spring as they continued their journey the rest of the way to Forest School.
The children did really well at this: they spotted bird nests high up in the trees, catkins they said were soft and dangling from Hazel trees, as well as many buds on the trees. We talked about how the buds contained the new leaves.
We were joined at Forest School by a selection of bird teddies, the children had a go at building their own bird nests for these birds and filling them with stone eggs, which they had decorated.
In the stream, the children worked together to gather mud to block in the gabs of a wooden dam that stretched from one side of the ditch to the other. They also gathered mud to try to block the flow of water into a hole in the ground, making sure to unblock it before they left Forest School, so that the water could flow freely.
