Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you’ve had an enjoyable half term and are ready for the last term in Reception, before moving to Year 1!

This term, we are going to enjoy a water filled fun learning journey. We will be enjoying finding out about how essential water is and where it comes from and what we need it for and how we can look after our water sources. Our journey will begin with some pirate fun including a pirate day!

Our key texts this term will be:

Literacy

We will be continuing to focus on using high frequency words in our writing as well as spelling words with more than one syllable. Also we will be writing our own stories based on the texts we are reading, as well as looking closely at the characters, settings and events of the stories we are sharing. Another skill we will develop is giving opinions and views about stories we have shared.

Maths

In Maths, we will be solving problems that apply all of the skills we have learnt so far. As well as this, we will be continuing to develop our knowledge of number, practising doubling and halving as well as recognising and ordering 2 digit numbers and learning about money and time, comparing and estimating. We will begin thinking about multiples and using 2’s, 5’s and 10’s through money.

Home Learning

We would like to thank you all for your effort with last terms home learning tasks including reading with your children.

Reading -Letters and Sounds Please read with your child regularly, even if it is a home or library book. At this stage it is really helpful to discuss the stories that you read and use story language such as, character, setting, beginning, middle and end. Also, encourage your child to predict the ending of the story and give their opinion of the texts that they read. Please record their ideas either in their reading record or their home learning books.
Writing We have our home learning books which the children can use to complete the home learning challenges. In addition to this they can practice their writing skills by writing their own pirate or sea character themed stories.

Thanks to all of you who have encouraged your children with this. Keep it up!

Splashing Home Challenges!

If you want to further your learning at home, you might like to try one or more of these challenges:

  • Paint a picture or make a collage of an under the sea image. What can you see under the sea?
  • Design your own pirate ship or pirate flag.
  • Create your own amazing lunch and design a menu for your family. Take photos of your meal to share with your friends.
  • Use Lego or another construction kit to build an amazing ship or boat.
  • With an adult’s help, find some objects around your house and test to see whether they float or sink when you put them in water. See if you can predict first what you think will happen and then see if you were right!

Trips and Events

During this term we are planning a visit to a seaside location with our friends from Chiddingly and St Mary’s. We will also be having a Pirate day, where we dress up and take part in fun activities. More details to follow very shortly.

Oak Newsletter Term 1 – ‘Once Upon a Time’

Click here to download a printable copy of this newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers,

Firstly, we would like to say how impressed we have been with the children since they have started with us. They have all settled into school life amazingly!

Our topic for this first term is ‘Once Upon a Time’. We will be spending time exploring some familiar stories such as ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. Alongside this, we will be working on number recognition and formation. We will also be developing our foundation understanding of letters and sounds.

Our key stories this term are ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’

The boxes below explain briefly the areas we will be looking at and some of the work we will be doing which will be incorporated through play and teacher focused activities.

Home Learning

We encourage children to continue their learning at home which will enhance their progress at school. There will be a meeting on Wednesday 26th September 2.45pm in Oak Class, to discuss home learning, reading and phonics. We have sent a picture book home for you to enjoy together, we will then send home phonic reading books following the meeting.

Phonics – If you are supporting you child with their phonics at home please visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ksblMiliA8  to ensure you are teaching the pronunciation of the sounds in the same way. There is also a link to the jolly phonic songs below.

As the year progresses and children’s understanding develops, home learning tasks will adapt and increase appropriately.

Reading Please read with your child regularly. At this stage it is really helpful to encourage the children to use the pictures to tell stories. You may like to add a positive or helpful comment in the reading diary but please acknowledge the fact that your child has read by signing and dating in the comments book. As a school, we really encourage children to engage with a range of texts. We are now providing reading record books that will solely be used to record ‘at home reading’. These books allocate a page to each week of the school year. Every week, children who have read 3 or more times will be entered into a raffle at the celebration assembly. In addition, a termly competition will be held within Oak Class with a prize given to the child who has been the most consistent in their reading across the term.

Children’s books are changed regularly and all books and book bags will be needed in school every day for 1:1 reading.

More information about our reading strategies will be given at the meeting.

Letters & Sounds Every week the children will bring home the sounds they have been working on during the week. In their home learning book, the children can practice these sounds by writing them, finding words that start with them and cutting pictures out of catalogues.

It would be really useful to support the children in identifying these sounds when reading with them.

Also to connect our learning in school with home, could you please find something small from home that starts with one of our sounds, for example P – pirate or S – Snake and bring it into school on Monday (ensuring it is named). This is so we can create a ‘Sound Table’ which the children can use.

Quick Reminders

  • Please can you make sure your child brings in a water bottle and their book bag every day.
  • Please do ensure that children always bring a coat, particularly as the British weather is unpredictable.
  • Our regular PE day is Thursday but PE kits should be in all week as we fit in other sessions where possible.

Useful websites

We hope you all have a lovely first term supporting the children in their learning and please do not hesitate to come and speak to us if you have any questions.

Thank you for your support.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you have had an enjoyable half term and are ready for the last term in Reception, before moving to Year 1!

This term, we are going to enjoy a water filled fun learning journey. We will be enjoying finding out about how essential water is and where it comes from and what we need it for. Our journey will begin with a mysterious mess! Ask your children about it!

Our key texts this term will be:

Literacy

We will be continuing to focus on using high frequency words in our writing as well as spelling words with more than one syllable. Also we will be writing our own stories based on the texts we are reading, as well as looking closely at the characters, settings and events of the stories we are sharing. Another skill we will develop will be to give opinions and views about stories we share.

Maths

In Maths, we will be solving problems that apply all of the skills we have learnt so far. These will be linked to our learning of these key texts. As well as this, we will be continuing our knowledge of number, practising doubling and halving as well as recognising and ordering 2 digit numbers and learning about money and time.

Other Areas of the EYFS

In other areas of the EYFS, we will be making links with our water theme, such as learning about things that float and sink and why this happens. Our Personal, Social and Emotional Development will begin to focus on our transition to Year 1 and we will be taking part in lots of activities which make us more familiar with the children in the class already, as well as exploring our new surroundings and routines, ready for September. The key to a successful transition to Year 1 is when children feel that this will be a positive experience and we aim to fully support them in this process. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to ask.

Sharing of Learning Journeys

Every Friday afternoon, between 3.15 and 3.30, the classroom will be open for you to come and look at your child’s learning journeys and share their book with them. This will also be an opportunity for you to discuss any queries or ask any questions in order to help your child’s learning at home. If for any reason this session cannot take place, we will let you know on the white board outside the classroom. We will be asking you to fill in your comments on these books so that your voice is also a part of your child’s learning.

We have sent home High Frequency Word Lists for the children to focus on and they need to be able to read these on sight. Please focus on the 5 words that are marked. Every time we read with your child, we will look at these words and mark the next ones so that they always have 5 to learn at home. Once your child can read these, we have the next list ready. When all these words are learnt, we will send home a spelling book for your child and focus on writing these.

Writing Our Independent Writing Books are working really well. Thanks to all of you who have encouraged your children with this. Keep it up!

In Week 1 we will be focussing on Chinese New Year and will be looking at Chinese food, traditions and art and craft. The children will also be making lots of observations and predictions about minibeasts. As Easter approaches, we will be learning about the Easter Story and talking about our Easter experiences.

Home Learning

We would like to thank you all for your effort with last terms home learning tasks including reading with your children.

Reading

Please read with your child regularly, even if it is a home or library book. At this stage it is really helpful to discuss the stories that you read and use story language such as, character, setting, beginning, middle and end. The more experiences that children have of sharing books at home, the quicker they progress in all areas of the curriculum as it develops their creativity, vocabulary and imagination, as well as furthering their reading and writing skills.

Letters and Sounds

Your child will be bringing home another High Frequency Word list which will be fixed inside the cover of their yellow Reading Record Book. Please could you work on learning the five words which are marked.

Maths

Individual Mathletics logins and passwords are fixed into the reading record book. There is no set Maths homework, however the children can access this website and enjoy the maths games whenever they choose at home.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope you all had a lovely Christmas.

Our new topic is ‘I Have the Power!’ During this term, we will be looking at how we are super, what super means and how we can be super learners. We will also look at people who help us in an emergency and answer the questions: When do we need help? What is an emergency? And what do we do in an emergency? We will also be learning some basic first aid! We are hoping to have visits to school from the local police and fire services. On Friday 2nd February, to celebrate our learning we will be having a Super Hero Academy Day at Chiddingly School which will finish with an award ceremony for parents to attend, further details will follow soon. The children from East Hoathly reception class will be coming to visit for the day.

Areas of Learning

Literacy

Our focus in literacy this term is using our phonic knowledge to write sentences, stories and recounts through talk for writing about our favourite superheroes. In reading, our phonics knowledge, high frequency and tricky words will develop further from our reading of different books such as non-fiction texts about the emergency services. We will also be enjoying the book, ‘Super Daisy’ by Kes Gray and Nick Sharratt.

Maths

In maths we are going to secure our knowledge of number, then we will look at addition and subtraction with the support of objects. We will also explore and compare weights using different scales and our hands.

The main part of the topic is looking at the police and fire fighters and their different roles in emergencies and prevention. This term will be filled with role play of different scenarios and how we can act quickly and safely to keep people safe. We will also look into how we can make the world around us safe and how technology can impact on this.

To develop our personal, social and emotional skills we are going to think about how we are special, our goals and ambitions and how we express and achieve these.

Home Learning

We would like to thank you all for your effort with last terms home learning tasks including reading with your children.

Reading Please read with your child regularly, even if it is just for a few minutes. At this stage it is really helpful to encourage the children to use the pictures and their developing letters and sounds knowledge, as well as spending time discussing the events of the story.
Letters and Sounds High Frequency word sheets will continue to come home. Please could you ensure that these are in the book bags every day so that we can monitor and review this with each child. There will be five words to learn at any one time but if you wish to do more, you could use others from the lists.

Super Home Challenges!

You might like to choose one of the following activities to try with your child at home. You can bring these into school whenever they are finished to share with the class.

  • Make a superhero badge.
  • Make a superhero vehicle using construction or junk modelling.
  • Write a superhero story or design a superhero costume.
  • Give someone in your house a super power and make a poster about it.
  • Find out about someone who helps others, eg. Coastguard, lollipop ladies, doctors, nurses etc.
  • Bring in any books that you have at home about people who help us to share.

Coming into School

This term we are encouraging all children to begin coming into school in the mornings independently. If children wish to be on the playground with the other classes, they can remain there until the bell rings at 8.50 and then come into school through the main door with the other children, just like at playtime and lunchtime. There will always be one of the Reception team on the playground from 8.40 for any messages to be passed on. The classroom side door will be open as normal for any children who still wish to be brought into school by parents and carers. After Easter all children will be coming in independently through the main door. Afternoon pick-ups will remain the same. This is to ensure the children are independent before they move into Year 1. If you have any questions about this, please speak to us.

Oak Newsletter Term 1 – ‘Jaws, Claws and Whiskers’

Click here for a printable version of this newsletter

Dear Parents,

Firstly, we would like to say how impressed we have been with the children since they have started with us. They have all settled into school life amazingly!

Our topic for this first term is ‘Jaws, Claws and Whiskers’. We will be spending time exploring different stories that encourage us to think about different animals that live in different places. Alongside this, we will be working on number recognition and formation. We will also be developing our foundation understanding of letters and sounds.

Our key stories this term are ‘Dear Zoo’, ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Flip Flap Jungle’.

The boxes below explain briefly the areas we will be looking at and some of the work we will be doing which will be incorporated through play and teacher focused activities.

Home Learning

We encourage children to continue their learning at home which will enhance their progress at school. There will be a meeting on Monday 26th September at 2.45pm in the classroom, to discuss home learning, reading and phonics. Reading books will be sent home after this.

Phonics – If you are supporting you child with their phonics at home please visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ksblMiliA8 to ensure you are teaching the pronunciation of the sounds in the same way. There is also a link to the jolly phonic songs below.

As the year progresses and children’s understanding develops, home learning tasks will adapt and increase appropriately.

Reading Please read with your child regularly. At this stage it is really helpful to encourage the children to use the pictures to tell stories.

We change the children’s Home Reading books regularly. Their books and book bags will however be needed in school every day for 1:1 reading. You may like to add a positive or helpful comment in the reading diary but please acknowledge the fact that the book has been read by signing and dating in the comments book.

More information about our reading strategies will be given at the meeting.

Letters & Sounds Every week the children will bring home the sounds they have been working on in the week.

  • Please can you make sure your child brings in a water bottle and their book bag each day.
  • Please can the children bring a coat every day, particularly as the British weather is unpredictable.
  • Our regular PE day is Monday and Friday but PE kits should be in all week as we fit in other sessions where possible.
  • Please can children with long hair have it tied back every day.

Oak Newsletter Term 6 – ‘Under the Sea’

Click here for a printable version of this newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you have had an enjoyable half term and are ready for the last term in Reception, before moving to Year 1!

This term, we are going to enjoy a water-filled, fun learning journey. We will be enjoying finding out about how essential water is and where it comes from and what we need it for. Through our texts, we will discover lots about the creatures that live under the sea and how they are unique

Our key texts this term will be:

Literacy – We will be continuing to focus on using high frequency words in our writing as well as spelling words with more than one syllable. Also, we will be writing our own stories based on the texts we are reading, as well as looking closely at the characters, settings and events of the stories we are sharing. Another skill we will develop will be to give opinions and views about stories we share.

Maths – In Maths, we will be solving problems that apply all of the skills we have learnt so far. These will be linked to our learning of these key texts. As well as this, we will be continuing our knowledge of number, practising number sentences, odd and even numbers as well as recognising and ordering 2 digit numbers and learning about time.

Every Friday afternoon, between 3.00 and 3.15, the classroom will be open for you to come and look at your child’s learning journeys. This will also be an opportunity for you to discuss any queries or ask any questions in order to help your child’s learning at home. If for any reason this session cannot take place, we will let you know on the white board outside the classroom. We will be asking you to fill in your comments on these books so that your voice is also a part of your child’s learning.

Home Learning

We would like to thank you all for your effort with last term’s home learning tasks including reading with your children.

Reading Please read daily with your child at home. We understand that time can be tight, but it is so important to your child’s progress. Some children like to read before school, some at dinner time and some before bed, whatever time suits your child best. At this stage it is really helpful to discuss the stories that you read and use story language such as character, setting, beginning, middle and end. Also, encourage your child to predict the ending of the story and give their opinion of the texts that they read.
Letters and Sounds

We have sent home High Frequency Word Lists for the children to focus on and they need to be able to read these on sight.

Please focus on the 5 words that are marked. When we read with your child, we will look at these words and mark the next ones so that they always have 5 to learn at home. Once your child can read these, we have the next list ready. When all these words are learnt, we will send home a spelling book for your child and focus on writing these.

Splashing Home Challenges!

We would like each child to choose at least one of these challenges to do at home. When they bring their learning in, we will share it with the class.

  • Paint a picture or make a collage of an under the sea image. What can you see under the sea?
  • Design your own pirate ship or pirate flag.
  • Use Lego or another construction kit to build an amazing ship or boat.
  • With an adult’s help, find some objects around your house and test to see whether they float or sink when you put them in water. See if you can predict first what you think will happen and then see if you were right!
  • Find three facts out about a creature that lives under the sea and share them with your friends.

Trips and Events

During this term we are having a ‘Pirate Curriculum Day’ with our friends from East Hoathly School. This will take place at Chiddingly on Thursday 29th June. More details will be sent in a separate letter soon.

houseHome Learning

We would like to thank you all for your effort with last terms home learning tasks including reading with your children. The children have already made great progress with learning sounds and every read will help this to become more secure. The homework will continue as last term.

Reading

Please read with your child regularly, even if it is just for 5 minutes.

It is really important that the children bring their book bags, yellow reading record and their reading book into school every day.

When reading with your child please acknowledge the fact that the book has been read by signing and dating in the comments book, or you may like to add a positive or helpful comment in the reading diary. We will change their books when appropriate.

Letters & Sounds

Letters and Sounds Books can continue to be used for home learning. Please practise writing the sounds, finding pictures of objects that begin with these sounds, drawing, and writing short words that you can think of. Try to include as many different ways of practising the sounds as possible.

Please feel free to bring in small, named objects that begin with these sounds too!

hedgehogKey questions to ask your child at home:

  • Which animals come out at night?
  • Why does the world get dark?
  • Who works at night time?
  • What sounds can you hear at night time?

Friday Afternoon Learning Journey Sharing

Every other Friday afternoon, beginning on Friday 11th November, we will be opening our doors after school for parents to come in and share their child’s learning journey with them. Please feel free to come in whenever you choose. There is no expectation for parents to come every fortnight as some weeks we have more to share than others but it would be lovely to see as many of you as possible over the coming weeks. We will be asking any visitors to add a small speech bubble to the learning journey to comment on a beautiful piece of work or an achievement that you are proud of. Please come to the classroom door as normal from 3.30pm-3.45pm.

Quick Reminders

  • Please can you make sure your child brings in a water bottle and their book bag each day.
  • Can the children please always have a coat in school particularly as the British weather is unpredictable.
  • Our PE days are Monday & Friday but PE kits should be in all week.
  • Welly Boots – Please can all children have a set of wellies in school at all times, this is so we can use the field and outside areas when it is wet and muddy. All in one waterproof suits are essential too.

Dear Parents,

Firstly, we would like to say how impressed we have been with the children since they have started with us. They have all settled into school life amazingly!

Our topic for this first term is ‘Marvellous Me’. We will be spending time exploring different stories that encourage us to think about feelings, differences and keeping healthy. Alongside this, we will be working on number recognition and formation and developing our foundation understanding of letters and sounds.

Our key stories this term are ‘Elmer’, ‘I’m Absolutely Too Small for School’ and ‘Katie in London’.

Home Learning

We encourage children to continue their learning at home which will enhance their progress at school. There will be a meeting on Monday 26th September at 2.45pm in the classroom, to discuss home learning, reading and phonics.

As the year progresses and children’s understanding develops, home learning tasks will adapt and increase appropriately.

Reading

Please read with your child regularly.

Letters & Sounds

Every week the children will bring home the sounds they have been working on in the week. In their home learning book the children can practice these sounds by writing them, finding words that start with them and cutting pictures out of catalogues.

  • Please can you make sure your child brings in a water bottle and their book bag each day.
  • Can the children please always bring a coat particularly as the British weather is unpredictable.
  • Our regular PE day is Monday but PE kits should be in all week as we fit in other sessions where possible.
