We recently had an Arts and Crafts Fair at school. The fair was an initiative of our pupil governors to raise money for the school and as a whole school project to raise awareness of eco-art in collaboration with the Artytime Scrapstore in Crowborough.
All the children in the school made a range of handmade items to sell at the fair using only resources from The Scrapstore in Crowborough.
The Scrapstore is one of our school courageous advocacy projects and Bev from the Scrapstore did an assembly and spoke about the benefits of art and recycling, reducing and reusing. She presented the school with a membership certificate.
At the fair, there was a wide variety of stalls and activities, including arts and craft stalls run by children and adults, bespoke animal paintings made with recycled materials by Mrs Carpenter, and an art workshop with local artist Lily Mitri on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Lily will use the mood boards to inspire a mural she will be painting on a wall opposite the Crowborough station. Children were invited to paint tambourines and plant their own seeds to take home.
We raised £210 and will donate 10% to the Scrapstore towards their extension project. The PTFA and pupil governors will meet to look at ideas for what to spend the money on.
Some quotes from the children:
“I didn’t know I could make so much stuff out of rubbish and junk.”
“I liked the workshop because I did a collage and I learnt about detectives.”
“It was really fun because we got to work together as a team and had to co-operate when we made our art.”
